About Me

Luthier guitar build repair chisel

My name is James Smith and I was born and raised in the suburbs of Cork, Ireland. I first discovered my fascination with musical instruments at my grandfather’s house when I was just 4 yrs old. My grandfather was an antique dealer, where all sorts of instruments from trumpets to flutes would come and go. I would always be fascinated, attempting to play them and one day after picking up a guitar I found it hard to put it back down!

I also discovered a strong interest in woodwork and repairing things while working alongside my father, who built and flew radio controlled model aeroplanes. Being too young to build them myself, I often built smaller toy replicas. Eventually I learned how to use a hammer and chisel in woodwork class in school. I quickly fell in love with the craft of woodworking and found I had a natural talent.

Leaving school, I wanted to work with my hands in joinery and cabinet making, but somehow ended up with a Civil Engineering degree! Having worked in Engineering and Sales for 12 years, I eventually realised this wasn't for me. My interest and yearning to work with wood which had never left, had grown stronger over time.

It was in 2018 that I quit the corporate world to follow my gut and passions in life. This was a difficult decision and I knew it would be a challenging path going forward. I discovered a Musical Instrument Build & Repair course in St Johns College in Cork City. After 2 years studying under Luthier Declan Young, I graduated with a Certificate of Distinction.

I haven't looked back since and I am delighted to finally be combining my passion for woodworking and guitar. I have finally found my true craft in the work of building new instruments and revitalising instruments in need of repair or enhancement.

There is immense satisfaction in carrying out meaningful work, which can be appreciated for many years to come.

Testimonials

“I had a hairline fracture on my beautiful Tanglewood guitar and by the time I noticed the issue the bridge had completely lifted off and only being held in place by the pickup wire, and the bridge had split along the pin holes into two separate pieces.
I brought the guitar to James, who restored what I thought would be a guitar I'd have to dump, back to its original state as if the damage never happened. It was a prompt and affordable service, and James is a really friendly and a skilled worker.
I couldn't recommend him more.”
